Huawei's new employee joins Ren Zhengfei: To stand on the shoulders of giants

Huawei’s leap-forward development in recent years has been a model for the growth of ethnic high-tech companies. As a founder, low-profile Ren Zhengfei has rarely appeared on public occasions. Although he is less and less involved in specific issues, every time he appears, he can make Huawei's internal "burn once" is a well-deserved "spiritual leader." According to C114 report, Ren Zhengfei delivered a cordial speech at the inaugural training forum recently. Through the story of the reform of the Chinese character, he encouraged all new employees to be open-minded and stand on the shoulders of their predecessors. Even if only one millimeter advances, it is a feat. . At the same time, he also solemnly emphasized, "If you always start from scratch, it will cost the company investment and it should be downgraded." The following is a record of Ren Zhengfei’s speech: Ren Zhengfei's speech at the new employee induction training forum Everyone wants me to talk about it. I don't know what to say to new employees. When I say reason, everyone will say I preach, then I will not only preach but what else will I do? After much deliberation, tell a story! Let us talk about the reform of Chinese writing. Some stories were heard by me many years ago. If anything is wrong, please forgive me. If you are right, you should make an introduction for your young people and you will know yourself again. The wrong place is even gossip, because I don't have time to verify. I. "Father of Chinese Pinyin" Zhou Youguang Earlier this year, Professor Zhou Youguang of Fudan University passed away. He died on the second day of his 112th birthday and died on the third day. I read a few books about him and felt deeply about it. I started with Zhou Youguang's reform of Chinese characters. Zhou Youguang is a famous linguist in China. He specialized in economics in his early years and was only converted into a linguist when he was nearly 50 years old. During the War of Resistance, he had no money. He led the press release on his way to the family to earn royalties. The manuscript was written more and he became interested in language. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, Zhou Youguang was sent to work in Europe by the Xinhua Bank. He found that Europeans attached great importance to the study of the alphabet, so he bought many letters and used his own time to study. After the founding of New China, Zhou Youguang was invited to serve as a member of the Hanyu Pinyin Project Committee. He participated in the Hanyu Pinyin reform program and made important contributions to the country. He was hailed as the “Father of Hanyu Pinyin”. Some people are not convinced that they have contributed more than one person. For thousands of years, thousands of literati have been determined to reform the unity of Chinese characters and pronunciation, and have given Chinese characters a voice. Modern people have developed phonetic characters and also used international phonetic transcriptions, but so far, Hanyu Pinyin is the most concise and convenient. Don’t worry, don’t look at the “father” as the only one. You can also have “grandfather, uncle, and sister of the Hanyu Pinyin...”. Many people have made great contributions, but Zhou Youguang has completed the goal of football. One foot." Similarly, some people have expressed their opinions on Yuan Longping's "Father of the World's Hybrid Rice," thinking that the earliest proposed hybrid rice was the American Henry Beachell, and that China's research on hybrid rice is not just a scientific research group, and some people are still ahead of him. The key to high-yielding hybrid rice is the discovery of male sterile plants. This was also discovered by his students. Why should he be called the “father of hybrid rice”? Because Yuan Longping studied the “cultivation and cultivation of crops” in the study, he explored the success of seed production techniques and produced a lot of food for China. From the perspective of grain production, he should be the "father of hybrid rice." This is how human society is groping in chaos. There are still many scientists in history, and even if they have not made too many achievements, they are also great. Do not pursue any original inventions or independent innovations. Standing on the shoulders of predecessors and making achievements is only great. You are very smart today because the wisdom of your predecessors has been taught to you. Tu Mu extracted artemisinin from plants and was the first inventor of the new antimalarial artemisinin and won the Nobel Prize. This is not her original invention. Tu Mu said it was from an ancient book. She led the scientific research team to systematically collate ancient medical books and herbal medicines, collect more than 2,000 kinds of prescriptions, and compile and compile them into "antimalarial prescriptions", and then selected more than 200 prescriptions from them, screened by modern scientific organizations, and extracted from A. annua with ethanol. Artemisinin, an improved method of extraction, finally discovered artemisinin in 1971. Therefore, the terms “original invention” and “independent innovation” are philosophically limited. We hope that new employees will have an open mind and stand on the shoulders of their predecessors. Even a mere millimeter advance will be a feat. If you always start from scratch, it will cost your company investment and it should be downgraded. Second, the two crises of Chinese characters The first crisis was the period of modern social transition in the late Qing and early Republic of China. During the semi-feudal and semi-colonial period of the late Qing Dynasty, people were lagging behind in thought. If someone went to take pictures of the peasants, he would also hit you with a stick, thinking that he would take his soul away. After the failure of the Westernization Movement, intellectuals began to reflect on the complexity of the expression of classical Chinese and could not popularize the people. The rise of Shakespeare’s literature, music, and paintings in Europe at that time was actually a philosophical baptism for Europe. Through the unity of people’s understanding of things, the quality of European culture was higher and the success of the Industrial Revolution was promoted. During the Russian Ekaterina II’s administration, a large number of Western paintings, music, dance, and philosophy were introduced. It was an impact on the old culture and it was a kind of liberation. Therefore, Russia took the lead in industrialization and was better than the Qing Dynasty when Empress Dowager Cixi was in power. Fast development. Russia has repaired the east-west railway, and we have the shame of the treaty. In the late Qing Dynasty, the Reform Movement began to consciously advocate vernacular and created the "popular classical language" called "new style." At the beginning of the last century, the slogan of the "literary revolution" was proposed. The characteristics of the new literature are the use of vernacular style, which plays a role in the development of modern industry. Of course, we use vernacular and do not deny classical Chinese. Direct and realistic are the first advantages of vernacular Chinese, and they also reflect the expressions of science, technology, and social progress more quickly. How do you describe the "blue lean mushrooms" and "Xidapu Ben" in the classical Chinese? Otherwise, today we cannot describe the rapid progress in classical Chinese. The progress of small countries and ethnic minorities is slow, but the language and words cannot keep up with social progress. At that time, China’s economy, military, and technology were very backward. The reason why the intellectuals lag behind was the backwardness of the economy. The reason is that the economy is backward because the education is backward and the education is backward because the characters are “difficult”, difficult to recognize, hard to remember, and difficult to write. The actor naturally assumes that English is so easy to learn. When one learns it, it takes no time and effort to learn a language. Chinese characters are too difficult to learn. Therefore, there are many illiterates in China. The solution was to reform Chinese characters. At that time, dozens of programs were designed. Some were post-intelligence (character encoding) and sketch predecessors, but more were pinyinization programs, that is, abolition of Chinese characters. In Lu Xun’s private letter to friends, he even said that “Chinese characters will not die and China will die”. Until the early 1950s, the road to pinyinization in Chinese was still the mainstream view. Not only the text reform, speech reform is also successful, Mandarin has spread throughout China. The second crisis was the computer age. In the 1980s, when I first arrived in Shenzhen and my computer had just emerged, I felt great anxiety and felt that the Chinese nation would be abandoned by the time because the computer was entered in English. What should Chinese characters do? Afterwards, Wang Yongmin invented the "Wang Chao Wubi", which is very great. Let us see China's hope. Of course, the Chinese character input method is more advanced today and is another story. The Chinese character is a malformed text that is not related to computers. It has been solved by this method. It has evolved to the present day. The Chinese character input method has been very simple and scientific. Today, Chinese characters are more than English in terms of information storage, transmission, editing, sorting, and retrieval. In the future, computer scans may be better than English, because Chinese characters are graphic characters and the error rate is low. Think of these things and see how the path to Chinese characters came. Today's Chinese characters happen to be suitable for the information age. This is related to many contributions made by their predecessors. China will unify the market, unify the law, and unify the characters so as to form a nationwide trade system. With the accession to the WTO, international trade will allow China's economy to develop rapidly. Therefore, for hundreds of years, written reforms are very important to the country and the nation. Third, Chinese character reform and promotion When I was a child, I was generally illiterate and the difficulty of literacy was extremely difficult. At that time, what we promoted to the poor was that you couldn’t read literacy, didn’t recognize the banknotes, was deceived, and prompted him to learn the culture and scan the language. Of course, if you are not literate, you will not use 100 yuan for one corner. We were eleven or twelve years old and went to the countryside every night to teach people to read. In the past few centuries, many devotees and benevolents devoted their efforts to reforming language and writing to eliminate illiteracy. Replacing Chinese characters with Latin is once the cry of an era. How many leaders urgently use Latinization means that ordinary people can speak and write together, eliminate illiteracy, and go to modernity. New China was established on October 1, 1949, and a text reform committee was established ten days later. Wu Yuzhang served as the director. The process of writing reforms is also very complicated. For internationalization, Chairman Mao also proposed using Latin to unify the text. Revolutionary leaders Li Dazhao and Qu Qiubai were also active promoters of this view. As for how to convert from Latin to Pinyin later, there is no publicly detailed record. I have heard a story: Wu Yuzhang told Chairman Mao that if they were changed to Latin, young people did not know Chinese characters and they did not understand history. In the reform conference of 1955, it was said that there were more votes than three. Chairman Mao was very democratic and gave up. Latin. (There is no basis for hearsay from abroad.) In the second stage, how can we make people literate? Study simplified Chinese characters and implement Chinese Pinyin method. At that time, a general culture teacher in the army invented a new Chinese phonetic transcription, laying the foundation for literacy. Chairman Mao met him three times. Then the Text Reform Conference in 1955 discussed the use of Latin letters for phonetic transcription. The earliest use of Beijing dialect as the standard, but the Beijing dialect had one more tone and required 29 letters. Wu Yuzhang accompanied Chairman Mao on the way to the meeting room and spoke to Chairman Mao on the car. If 29 letters are used, there will be 50 million overseas Chinese who will not understand it in the future. Chairman Mao agreed to use 26 Roman alphabets for phonetic transcription. This is the basis of Putonghua. In the third stage, the Chinese Pinyin program should become an international standard. If the reform of the written language is only on the Chinese soil and does not enter international standards, there is a problem with the Chinese language. During the Cultural Revolution, the country basically did not participate in international conferences. In 1979, the International Standards Committee sent a letter inviting Zhou Youguang to Paris to attend the ISO. He first refused, saying that his clothes were broken. The country gave him new coats, shoes, and socks, and returned to the country before returning to the public. He did not take a renminbi or a dollar, so he went to an international conference. Because it is a foreign invitation, it is not publicly sent abroad, 30 US dollars will not be issued; the renminbi is a foreign exchange control, not allowed to bring abroad, so empty-handed on the plane. At this meeting, he introduced China's views on the Hanyu Pinyin program, made it possible for the international community to see the reform of our writing and did a basic job of extensive publicity. But at the time, many countries boycotted them because they changed their national library books and they needed to spend tens of millions of dollars. The second Warsaw International Conference accepted the international standard for spelling Chinese with the Chinese Pinyin Scheme. However, the meeting proposed that China should have a positive lexical system. This is very difficult to achieve. China has not even had a conjunction. The third international conference proposed a meeting in China. Zhou Youguang reported to the state. In 1981, he had just opened up reforms. Deng Xiaoping agreed and held a meeting in an air force guest house in Nanjing. The meeting was very successful. Zhou Youguang persuaded everyone to accept the Chinese alphabet with 26 letters, and the Chinese Pinyin Scheme became an international standard. Having experienced so much suffering and pain, Chinese characters have finally come to this path that is appropriate for China's development. In our written reform, everything is for internationalization. For example, the previous Chinese characters were vertically arranged (the direction was from right to left), and later changed to horizontal (direction is from left to right), conforming to people's eyesight and writing convenience, played a significant role in the internationalization of Chinese characters. Everyone should not laugh at their predecessors. They are all touching stones and crossing rivers. Five thousand years later people may also laugh at our group of “fools” of Huawei, but five thousand years later things did not come out of thin air, but our step by step efforts to increase their development. Fourth, take a look and make an appointment, thick and thin hair Zhou Youguang worked in New York when he was young. His classmates taught in Princeton and introduced him to chat with Einstein because Einstein was too lonely. Einstein talked about physical gravitational waves and the like. Zhou Youguang spoke about the international economy. In the "earth book" of the situation, they only have one sentence in common - "The greatness of life is in the amateur." When new employees enter the company, they should actively strengthen communication, make full preparations, and give full play to their best. It is hoped that the young people will focus on prolific food production and enhance soil fertility. They are not limited to their respective professions and communicate across departments and professions. Huawei’s previous tradition was “happiness and eating omnivorous food.” A group of people communicated with each other, raised each other, and complained less. If we use the energy of complaints to “shave the ground,” I believe there will be no complaints when the results are harvested, wages rise, and opportunities arise. The community of voices is open, all criticisms of our posts will not be cut, and the privacy of the posters will be protected. If you don't suffer from depression after you've finished, we're also contributing. However, simple praise is not necessary; no reason to attack is not desirable; especially personal attacks are even less desirable. We can also distinguish between constructive opinions in the community and draw reasonable nutrition from them. I saw a message in the community saying that I hate learning philosophy. As a grassroots employee, learning philosophy is not important, as long as the hard work, more food, more bonuses, they will live and work. However, cadres above the middle and high levels must learn a little philosophy because philosophy is the compass of life. You see, it is impossible to plant tulips on the Gobi Desert. This shows that there is no philosophy of northeastern black land on the Gobi Desert. Tsinghua Wang Guowei once said to the Westernization Movement that it is not important to open mines or set up factories. China must popularize philosophy. Only the entire nation has improved its quality and raised the concept of logic between things. Only after the mind is opened can we build innovation. To take a step higher and change the rigid dogma is philosophy. We do not require new employees to study philosophy. In the future, they will learn more after being promoted. They will use strategies and tactics, and have a scientific “scalpel” for anatomizing the world and dissecting organizations. As the company is undergoing structural adjustment, many documents are open to all employees and it is suggested that you read more company documents and understand the company more profoundly. Books are the best teachers. All the wisdom can be found in the book. Some of them are direct answers, and more are those who read. General employees do one thing well, but the work of leading cadres is multi-faceted. In particular, dealing with people requires a profound understanding of people and things. Philosophy is the study of people's knowledge. Fortunately for history, we have not only preserved the traditional Chinese language, but also successfully promoted Putonghua across the country. What a great contribution this is! What a great foundation for the rise of the great motherland and for the realization of modernization! We pay tribute to the reformers who have been fighting for text reform for hundreds of years! We also need to add bricks and tiles to history. Hope is pinned on you.
